The tram is significant to the relationship between Michael and Hanna as this is what sparks off one of their fights. It is significant in the sense that Michael goes and visits Hanna outside of her house for the first time. Before the tram visit they had only met up inside her house as Hanna's house is the usual place where both their worlds came together. When coming to the tram, Michael steps into Hanna's world outside of the bubble that they share. This results in a fight which represents that Michael is not welcome in other parts of Hanna's life and that she holds a barrier of how much he is let in. This then gives the reader an idea that Hanna shelters herself off in order to conceal something which shows a flaw in their relationship. Michael steps into the second compartment and Hanna stays in the first with the tram driver, she doesn't go into the second compartment to greet Michael even though she knows he's there as she might be ashamed of him. This shows that she only accepts Michael when he's in her house. Outside of her house, she feels embarrassed of him and doesn’t acknowledge him at all.
