Challenging stereotypes - post by Annika x x
There is a man in a shop at the till purchasing a necklace encrusted with a few jewels. He is dressed in a tight fitting pink v-necked t-shirt with white trousers. On his feet he wears newly polished black pointy shoes and his hair is carefully arranged with various hair products and gels so that each strand sticks up at perfect angles; even a small gust of wind would ruin his hairdo.. As he approaches the till to buy his jewellery, the woman at the counter immediately assumes that he is homosexual from one sweeping glance of his dress style. When he starts talking to her, his accent resembles that of a stereotypical homosexual, further certifying her initial speculation. She does not notice the golden ring on his left hand until he hands over a wad of £10 notes. She politely asks him if he is married and he replies yes, just recently. The cashier feels guilty about making assumptions but hands him back his change and wishes him a good day as he exits the store.
